Privacy Policy
- No account. Contour has no sign-up, no login, and no user profiles.
- No analytics, no ads, no tracking. The app contains no analytics, crash-reporting, advertising, or tracking SDKs, and does not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
- No servers of ours. Your rides live in a local database on your device. We never see them.
- Location only while recording. GPS runs while you record a ride — shown with the system indicator — and stops when you end it.
- iCloud sync is off by default. If you turn it on, data syncs only to your own iCloud private database. We cannot access it.
- Apple Health is write-only. If you enable it, Contour writes workouts to the Health app. It never reads your health data.
- We don't sell your data. We can't — we never collect it in the first place.
1Who we are
Contour is an iOS app for recording bike rides, developed by Evanworks ("Contour", "we", "us"). This policy explains what data the app handles, where it is stored, and when anything leaves your device. It applies to the Contour app downloaded from the App Store.
2Data Contour handles, and where it lives
Contour is local-first. Everything below is stored in an on-device database and stays there unless you turn on one of the optional features described later in this policy.
| Data | Examples | Stored |
|---|---|---|
| Ride records | Route (GPS points), GPS and barometer elevation, speed, distance, climb, ride name, notes, mood | On your device only |
| Sensor readings | Heart rate, power, cadence recorded during rides from your paired sensors | On your device only |
| App settings | Nickname, weight, units, FTP, paired sensors, preferences | On your device only |
| Bikes | Bike profiles; garage photos never leave the device and are never synced | On your device only |
Contour contains no third-party analytics, crash-reporting, advertising, or tracking SDKs. There are no Contour accounts, no log-ins, and no profiles on any server of ours — we do not operate any server that receives your ride data.
3Location data
Contour uses your location only while you are recording a ride:
- GPS starts when you start recording and stops when you end the ride. While a ride is in progress, location continues in the background so your route is complete even if you lock the screen — iOS shows its standard location indicator while this happens.
- Route points are used to draw your ride, compute distance and elevation, and are stored locally as part of the ride record.
- Privacy blur is on by default: points within roughly 300 m of your ride's start and end are marked as sensitive. They are hidden from map display options and removed from GPX/FIT exports unless you explicitly turn the blur off. This protects places like your home.
- We never receive your location. There is no server to send it to.
4Apple Health (HealthKit)
HealthKit integration is off by default and only does one thing: write. If you turn it on in Contour's settings, the app saves each ride to the Health app as a workout, including distance, calories, elevation, average/max speed, and the route. Contour never reads any data from the Health app — not steps, not heart rate, not anything else. You can remove Contour's workouts at any time in the Health app, and revoke Contour's write permission in Settings › Health.
5iCloud sync
iCloud sync is off by default and requires Contour Pro. If you enable it:
- Your rides (routes and sensor samples), bike profiles (without photos), FTP history, and select settings (nickname, weight, bio, units, paired sensors) sync through your own iCloud account.
- Data goes to your iCloud private database — the same personal storage other apps' iCloud data lives in. It is not posted anywhere public, and we cannot access it; syncing works directly between your devices through Apple.
- Apple's handling of iCloud data is governed by your agreement with Apple. You can manage or delete this data anytime in iOS Settings › your name › iCloud › Manage Storage.
6Bluetooth sensors
Contour can connect to standard cycling sensors — heart rate straps, power meters, and speed/cadence sensors — over Bluetooth. Scanning happens only on the sensor pairing screen, and only looks for those three standard sensor types. Readings become part of your ride record on your device; they are not transmitted anywhere else.
7Third-party services
The app talks to very few external services, and none of them receive anything that identifies you:
- OpenStreetMap Overpass API — to snap your route to roads, Contour downloads road-network data for the map grid cells your route passes through. The request contains only the geographic rectangle of those cells, never your track points.
- Open-Meteo elevation API — to fill in elevation where GPS altitude is poor, coordinate points (in batches) are sent for elevation lookup. The coordinates carry no identity and are not stored by us anywhere.
- Apple — the system MapKit provides map tiles, CloudKit provides iCloud sync, and App Store handles purchases. These services operate under Apple's own privacy policy.
8Purchases
Contour Pro subscriptions and the lifetime unlock are processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. We never see your payment details, and we do not run our own account or receipt server — your purchase state is managed by Apple and stored on your device.
9Exporting and sharing
Everything that leaves your device leaves it because you asked it to: exporting a ride as GPX/FIT/XLSX, backing everything up as JSON or ZIP, or saving a share card. Exports and shares go through the system share sheet, so where they end up is your choice. Share cards contain ride statistics and your nickname — never your live location.
10Data retention and deletion
- On your device: data lives in the app until you delete it. Delete individual rides in the app anytime; deleting the Contour app removes all local data.
- In iCloud: if you use sync, delete unwanted data via iOS Settings › your name › iCloud, or by deleting the app's iCloud data. Deleting the app also offers to remove its iCloud data.
- In Health: Contour workouts can be deleted in the Health app.
11Children
Contour is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your jurisdiction). Because the app collects no personal data and has no accounts, no verification is performed — but if you believe a child has provided personal information through the app somehow, contact us and we will help remove it.
12Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update this page and the date at the top. Changes take effect when the updated policy is published. Continued use of the app after publication means you accept the updated policy.
